Brrrrrr, it’s (most probably) going to be a cold one!
As we slide through autumn and a wintry chill hits the air, now is the time to make sure you protect your plants from the effects of extreme cold and wet weather. Fleece covered frames will protect plants in the open ground. Tender plants should be planted in pots so they can be moved indoors. Make an effort to cover the bases of Evergreens will a thick layer of mulch, this way they can still take up moisture and not dehydrate. Protect the crowns of tree ferns and insulate their trunks by wrapping them in layers of fleece and hessian stuffed with straw. Cordylines and palms should be treated similarly; tie their leaves into bunches to protect their crowns. In mild winters these plants can manage alone but temperatures have plummeted these last two winters and its best not to take any chances!
